Processing of /i/ and /u/ in Italian cochlear-implant children: a behavioral and neurophysiologic study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cochlear implants partially restore auditory sensation in individuals affected by severe to profound hearing loss. We investigated vowel detection, identification, and discrimination in a group of congenitally-deafened, unilaterally-implanted, Italian children and in a group of age-matched controls, by combining behavioral and neurophysiologic measures. Comparable vowel identification and discrimination performance emerged for cochlear-implant and normalhearing children at the behavioral level. At the neurophysiologic level, on the other hand, cochlear-implant children appeared to lag behind their age-matched normalhearing peers for vowel detection and identification, but not for vowel discrimination. Length of cochlear implant use significantly affected vowel processing at the neurophysiologic level, although not systematically.

High and Front Vowel Processing in Italian Cochlear-implant Children: a Behavioral and Neurophysiologic Study
Cochlear implants (CI) partially restore auditory sensation in deaf individuals affected by an hearing impairment >70dB. Event-related potentials (ERPs) are are brain responses automatically elicited by auditory sounds. ERPs provide information regarding several dimentions of speech sound processing, such as timing (via peak latency), accuracy/strength (via peak amplitude), size of neuronal act...
متن کاملStudy and Comparison of Formant Characteristics of Persian Vowels in 4-7-year-old Children Using Cochlear Implants and Those Using Hearing Aids
Background and Objective: One of the most important physical properties of vowels is their formant structure. One of the most obvious speech errors in hearing-impaired children is vowel errors. The present study aimed to determine and compare the formant structure of Persian vowels in deaf and cochlear implant children in the age range of 4-7 years. Materials and Methods: This descriptive-anal...

Objectives: Phonemic awareness skills have a significant impact on children speech and language. The purpose of this study was investigating the phonemic awareness skills of children with cochlear implant and normal hearing peers in primary school. Methods: phonemic awareness subscales of phonological awareness test were administered to 30 children with cochlear implantation at the first to ...
متن کاملComparing Anxiety, Depression, and Stress in Consanguineous Versus Non-Consanguineous Parents of Children With Deafness in Baqiyatallah Hospital’s Cochlear Implant Center From 2007 to 2009
Background: The birth of a child with a hearing disability is a stressful event in the family. Since consanguineous marriages are associated with the incidence of congenital hearing loss, it is expected that such parents will experience greater psychological problems. Objective: The current study investigated and compared anxiety, depression, and stress i...
متن کاملEFFECT OF A UDITORY-VERBAL REHABILITATION ON VOICE PARAMETERS IN CHILD COCHLEAR IMPLANT USERS
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of auditory-verbal rehabilitation on voice parameters after implantation with cochlear implants 2 and 5 months after rehabilitation and compare them with normal voice children (under 12 years of age). A perceptive and electroacoustic evaluation of voice was carried out through a digital analysis after implantation and rehabilitation. The study was pe...
